Position Description

Reeves-Reed Arboretum seeks a part-time Summer Intern for 2012. Through hands-on horticultural work, the Summer Intern will learn the fundamentals of display horticulture and living collections care in a public-garden environment.

Applicant should have some horticultural experience, a willingness to learn, a genuine enthusiasm for gardening, and the ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. and work outdoors in typical weather conditions. This position is offered May – September, 20 hours per week. Start and end dates are flexible. No financial compensation is offered for this position; Reeves-Reed Arboretum is pleased to work with the incumbent’s educational institution to provide documentation of internship status for academic credit.

Skills Required

  • Basic plant identification
  • Basic horticulture skills (pruning, fertilizing, planting, transplanting, watering, staking, weeding, mulching, etc.)
  • Experience using  garden tools

About Reeves-Reed Arboretum

The only arboretum in Union County, NJ, Reeves-Reed Arboretum  encompasses 13.5 acres of historic gardens, horticultural displays, and natural woodland and meadow areas. Originally established as a private estate in 1889, the Arboretum opened its doors to the public in 1974 and is listed on both the National and State Registers of Historic Places. Reeves-Reed Arboretum seeks to engage, educate and enrich its visitors so they may become better stewards of nature and the environment.  This mission is achieved through the care and utilization of an historic estate and gardens.
